Nikolaus Peterknecht was born on February 21, 1966 in Mainz, Germany. He studied industrial engineering and software technology and obtained his academic degree in computer science in 1996. Between 1989 and 1996, Nikolaus Peterknecht was a managing partner of Peterknecht & Konrad GbR, a company developing individual software solutions.

2000, Nikolaus Peterknecht served at Drägerwerk AG in various capacities: first as a developer, then as a project manager for surgical documentation, and finally as Product Manager and Director of the department for the development of surgical documentation. Between early 2000 and April of 2001, he was Configuration Manager at Micrologica AG.

Between 2001 and 2004, he was Director of Software Engineering at Varigon AG. Some of his special qualifications include the communication of electronically coded medical data, the design of complex software systems, quality control in software development, data analysis using OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing), and the design and analysis of databases.
